"The Books That Have Shaped My Life"

Quite a few of you have asked for book recommendations, for helping recognize negative programming, build better habits or develop more prosperity consciousness.  This is a fun subject; one that I love to visit often.  So here’s my list of some of the top ten most influential books in my life.  (So far.)

This isn’t meant to be the greatest books of all time, because I  think that will be different for everyone.  But these were definitely the greatest for me, and shaped my life the most.

Make sure to grab your 5 FREE Gifts worth $497 when you join over 200,000 of your peers & enroll  for our Training Newsletter
============================================================

#1) Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

The book that impacted my philosophy for living the most.  Nothing else is even close.  It’s a novel, which surprises many people, but in it Rand introduces the concept of Objectivism.  The writing is brilliant, the characters are fascinating, and the work is sheer genius.

Every time I re-read it (which I do every year), I still get goose bumps when I get to the section beginning with the words, “This is John Galt speaking…”  This link is the centennial hard cover edition that should be on the bookshelf of every serious student of philosophy, politics, self-development or psychology.

#2) As a Man Thinketh by James Allen

It’s a little book and sells for $7 or $8, so people don’t take it as seriously as they should.  I almost wish it sold for $50,000, so people would read it with the reverence it deserves.  This should be on your bed stand to read a little every night before you go to sleep.

#3) The Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes

The meta-physical masterpiece.  The “how-to” manual for everything you want to do in life.

#4) Shibumi: A Novel by Trevanian

Another work of fiction, and another one that introduced me to a philosophy of living.  The protagonist Nicholai Hel is an assassin, so you know it’s right up my alley.  He’s best described by a character in the story who calls him half saintly ascetic, half Vandal marauder – a medieval anti-hero.

He is your vintage ‘man-against-the-herd.’   When you read about the dangers of technology, terrorism, government corruption, and seeking spiritual perfection, you’ll have a hard time believing this was written in 1979.  The true test of a timeless classic.

#5) Prosperity by Charles Fillmore

Charles was the co-founder of Unity, and years before his time.  One of the spiritual warriors that started the new thought movement.  It’s written in the language of 1900, so it takes a little work to process.  But well worth the effort.

#6) Think and Grow Rich by  Napoleon Hill

The all-time classic.  Don’t read any updated or revised versions.  Get this original, for the information is simply too profound to mess with, dumb down, or alter in any way.

#7) The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

Another novel, this one makes the list because it is the first Rand book I ever read, and the one that addicted me to her brilliant, beautiful, and bitter writing.  A superb story, and one that will cause you to think long and hard on strength of the individual.

This link is another centennial hardcover edition that should be one of your treasured tomes.

#8) On the Road by Jack Kerouac

This book captured my imagination when I was dope-smoking young man and it still captivates me today.  It was reading this book that led me to want to become a writer.

I’m re-reading it again, and I’m simply amazed at what spectacular writing it is.  This link is the 50th anniversary edition hard-cover, which you should will to someone you love after your death.

#9) The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

Kind of surprising to me as I compile this list today, how many of these works are fiction, since I normally read so much non-fiction self-development books.  This is another novel that captivated me with the brilliant storytelling and inspired me to write.

Also a great portrait of a contrarian’s journey.  Simply delicious.  This slot was actually a tie with this and Moby Dick, for all the same reasons.  I flipped a coin.

#10) Break Out!: 5 Keys to Go Beyond Your Barriers and Live an Extraordinary Life by Joel Osteen , a good friend of mine & one of my personal mentors.

He told me that writing this book was one of the most introspective things he did in his life.  It made him really sort through a lot of things and do some serious critical thinking on his own philosophies of health, success, and prosperity.  We teach what we most need to learn.

If a meteorite lands on your home, kills your family, your business goes bankrupt, you’re afflicted with a terrible disease, and suffering from depression, get these ten books.

Then go somewhere quiet for a week and read them all.   Within six months you will find your perfect soul mate, become a multi-millionaire, cure your sickness and be the happiest person you know.

Ok I showed you mine – now show me yours!

To YOUR Success,

"7 Simple Life-Changing Decisions You Can Make TODAY!"

I used to think changing your life required big, tangible actions…things you could see and hear and feel.

But I was wrong.

The important changes don’t happen outside–they happen in our heads. First we decide, then we act.

So today I wanted to offer you 7 decisions that you can make, right now, that will set in motion the changes you’re after.

#1. Decide Enough is Enough
Decide that enough is enough. All the problems you’ve merely dealt with, all the times you’ve settled for less than you really wanted–no more. Enough is enough.

You’re not going to waste another month, week, or day living a life you don’t want.

Or, if things aren’t all bad, you’re not going to put up with the areas that are dragging down the rest.

#2. Ramp Up the Standards
Decide that you’re going to raise your standards. People’s lives are a reflection of their expectations.

If you expect to quit when things are hard, you’ll quit. When you expect to find a way out of every dire situation, you’ll find it.

I worked with a friend who often came in late, clothes disheveled, moving at half speed. When that same friend left for a similar position at a competitor, he came in early, looked sharp, and gave full energy.

The difference? Standards.

The first employer didn’t expect their people to be on time or looking good. The second company would accept nothing less. As soon as he walked through the door for his new job, it was made clear that the standards were high. So he met them.

#3. No More Excuses
Decide that you’re no longer going to make excuses. I cannot tell you how many times I hear empty excuses to cover up inaction. If you’re alive and kicking, you can do something about the things you want.

No Matter What!

But the second you make an excuse, all hope is lost. You’re not going to pinpoint the real problem, you’re not going to take real action. You’re just going to hide behind a reason you know, deep down, is a lie.

Refuse to fall back on excuses. If things are going to change, you are going to change them…regardless of the obstacles.

#4. Embrace Team Effort
Decide you’re going to work with others. You’re an achiever, which is why you’re reading this. But that doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. You most certainly should not.

You are one person with one mind and one perspective. Add just one more person and you’ve doubled them all. This is no small feat.

When you decide to attack your goals in a team, you’re drastically increasing manpower and brainpower.

Most important, you’re bringing in new perspectives that will see the world–and your goals–in an entirely new light. This opens the door to a host of solutions that you never would have considered.

Ask for help. Listen closely. Return the favor.

#5. Good Enough to Get Going
Decide that good enough is good enough. Reading a book isn’t that hard. It’s definitely not scary.
Googling and Yahooing isn’t hard either.

And that’s why millions of people endlessly research their goals instead of actually achieving them.

They’re trapped in an endless loop of avoidance, learning more and more about what they want but never taking a real step toward it!

Stop it.

When you know enough about your goal to do something about it, do it. Don’t wait to read one more article. Don’t buy another book.

Roll up your sleeves, rub your hands together, and get to work.

#6. The Magic Pill
Decide that you’ll stop looking for the magic pill. Changing your life isn’t a mystery. There is no grand secret locked away in a dusty volume of the shelves of an old monastery in a far away land.

Yes, there are thousands of tips and tricks to help you on your way. And there are great programs to offer guidance and structure.

But, in the end, it comes down to doing what needs to be done.

That can never happen if you continuously seek out the magic pill to your problems. Instead of making things happen, you’ll just hop from fad to fad, wasting your time, energy, and money.

There’s no magic pill, so decide to stop looking.

#7. When Is A Good Time?
Decide that you’re going to start now. The longer you put off acting on your goals, the smaller the chance that you’ll follow through. It’s like a pot under running water: the longer you wait, the heavier and harder the task.

The step doesn’t have to shake the earth. It just has to happen. Now.

So tell me, ( and most importantly yourself!),what is one small thing you can do to move a step closer to your goal?

Do it.

"The Secret to Being a Likeable Person" by Pastor Rick Warren

“Joseph lived in the home of Potiphar, his Egyptian owner. Soon Potiphar realized that the LORD was helping Joseph to be successful in whatever he did. Potiphar liked Joseph and made him his personal assistant.” (Genesis 39:2-4a CEV)

If you want to stand out at work, you need to be likeable. If people don’t like you, they’re not going to trust you, and they certainly won’t promote you.

A lot of people think that likeability is just a matter of personality. You’re either a likable person or you’re not.

But nothing could be further from the truth. Likeability is not personality; it’s character. It’s behavior. It’s how you choose to relate to other people. Likeability is possessing the attractive attitudes — and those are choices — and the relational skills that cause others to want to work with you.

Do you want to be liked by other people?

Here’s the big secret: Like them. That’s it. If you like people, guess what? They’re going to like you. If you don’t like people, they’re not going to like you. To be likeable you just have to like people. You have to genuinely enjoy them.

You have to choose to be interested in others and think less about yourself.

Joseph is a good example of likeability in Genesis 39:2-4: “Joseph lived in the home of Potiphar, his Egyptian owner. Soon Potiphar realized that the LORD was helping Joseph to be successful in whatever he did. Potiphar liked Joseph and made him his personal assistant” (CEV).

Potiphar took a guy who started off as a slave and promoted him to the manager of his household because he noticed he was a good person, and he liked him.

What are the attractive attitudes that make someone likeable? How about humility? Would you rather be around someone who is arrogant or someone who is humble?

How about cheerfulness? Would you rather be around somebody who’s cheerful or grouchy?

How about empathy? When you tell others that you’re not feeling well, would you rather they respond, “That’s too bad” or “I’m really sorry. What’s going on?” When you’re empathetic with someone who is hurting, guess what? You’re likeable. Bosses like people who are empathetic to their stress, who understand, who look at a situation from somebody else’s viewpoint.

When you help somebody else succeed, then you’re going to be likeable. And when you’re likeable, you’re going to go far.

" The Step-by-Step Guide to Overcoming Distraction"

“Bring the mind into sharp focus and make it alert so that it can immediately intuit truth, which is everywhere. The mind must be emancipated from old habits, prejudices, restrictive thought processes and even ordinary thought itself.” - Bruce Lee
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Addict's Guide to Overcoming the Distraction Habit

    By Leo Babauta

Yesterday wasn’t a very focused day for me — I got work done, but I also researched a bunch of newish personal interests (mostly programming and cycling), played an iPhone trivia game with my kids, read a bunch of online articles, and did very little of the writing I’d planned.

Digital distractions have also pulled me from reading and meditation in the last week. I think they plague all of us to varying extents.

Realizing this, today I closed all the tabs I’d been researching and reading, bookmarked a few things to read later, shut down the trivia game on my phone, closed email, and took a break.

    I meditated.

I showered, and contemplated what was important to me.

Then I got on my bike to get outside and get the blood circulating.

Then I found a place with no wifi, and sat down to write.

This is a guide for my fellow addicts. Those of you who have as much trouble as I do fighting off the temptations and distractions, this is for you. From one addict to another.

    Recognizing When it Happens
One of the insidious things about the distraction habit is we often don’t even realize it’s happening. It sneaks up on us, like old age, and before we know it we’re addicted and powerless.

But actually we’re not powerless. The power we have is our awareness, and you can develop it right now. Pay attention to what sites you visit, how often you’re looking at your phone, how long you’re spending in front of a screen all day.

What I did when I wanted to develop an awareness of my smoking urges was carry around a pencil and small scrap of paper, and put a tally mark on it each time I had the urge to smoke. I could still smoke, but I’d have to put a tally mark first.

This built my awareness muscle, and it allowed me to insert a small space between the urge and my subsequent action. Into that space, however small, I could eventually make a choice. That is where the power comes in.

    See What's Going On

Once you’re aware of the distractions and urges, you can start to examine the causes.

After hours of following temptations online (learning all about cycling and programming, for example), I stopped and asked myself, “What’s this all about?”

It was about fear — the fear I didn’t know what I was doing and was going to screw it all up. I now know it doesn’t matter if I screw it up. My value as a person isn’t tied to my successes or failures. So I closed all the tabs, and decided to focus on one program, and one bike ride. I’ll learn as I do.

My distractions are also often about fantasies — I really hope I’ll be a great programmer or start doing century bike rides or Ironman triathlons. Realistically, I don’t have time to do any of that. So I have to let the fantasies go, because they almost never come true. Unless you’re willing to devote your entire life to one of them for a year or two.

Distractions, of course, are often about the fear of missing out. We can’t possibly take part in every cool thing everyone else is doing, but we also don’t want to miss out on any of it. So we look online for what’s going on, what other people are doing and saying, what’s hot. None of that actually matters. What matters is being content, doing things that make people’s lives better, learning, being compassionate, helping. Let’s let go of what we’re missing out on, and focus on the difference we want to make in the world.

    Taking Action
So you’re building an awareness, and you’ve examined your causes. If you haven’t yet, take a few minutes to walk around your office or house, or better yet get outside, and contemplate these things.

    This article can wait.

Now there are further steps you can take. Consider taking one or more of these:
    • Start closing as many browser tabs as you can. Bookmark some things, save others in your favorite “read later” service (such as Instapaper or Pocket), and let others go.
    • Block your favorite distractions for a few hours. Games, social media sites, news sites. You don’t really need to go to them that often.
    • Write down the times you’re going to check email and other messages. Want to process email for 20 minutes at 10 AM, 1 PM, and 4 PM? Write that down. Stick to it.
    • Get away. Go outside for a walk. Ride your bike. Go for a run. Take the kids to the park.
    • Meditate. Sit still for just a couple minutes, without any distractions, and put your attention on your breath. Return to the breath when you get distracted.
    • Read. A paper book. Close all screens and just give yourself some quiet reading time.
    • Find a place with no wifi. Or turn off your router. Write without distractions. Close all applications besides your writing program.
    • Delete social media accounts. I recently went back on Facebook to connect with my family during my dad’s hospitalization and death. But the privacy violations and useless things being posted there sent me running, and I deleted my account again.
    • Delete distractful apps on your phone. Games, social media, whatever you tend to turn to when you want a bump of distraction.
    • Eat without a device. Pay attention to your food. Notice the textures, flavors, colors, healthfulness that you’re putting into the temple of your body.
Of course, there are other things you can do. Go on a retreat. Practice mindfulness in bits throughout the day. Take a day off of screens. The possibilities are endless.

    Considering What's Important
What’s truly important to you? Social media? News? What everyone else is doing all the time? Games?

I’d submit we try to do everything, but then we’re not really focusing on anything. We’re not going to make any of our little fantasies come true if we pursue all of them.

What is the one thing you want to pursue right now? Can you focus on that for at least a month? If not, maybe it’s not that important to you.

What are the most important things in your life? Pick 3-4, or 5 at the most. How much of your time is devoted to these things? Can you cut out other things to focus on these? Can you give your 4 most important things your full attention?

In my life, my writing, my family, my health, and my learning are my four most important things.

And no, I don’t always devote my full attention to them. I often need to step back and remind myself of what’s important.

Falling in Love All Over Again

In his book, The Art of Stillness, Pico Ayer says, “sitting still is a way of falling in love with the world and everything in it.”

This is absolutely true. This is why distractions can be so harmful. They’re turning us away from the miracle of life all around us.

Sit still for a few minutes, and pay attention to what’s around you. Notice the quality of the light.

Appreciate any people who might be nearby. Notice the quality of your thoughts, the sensations of various parts of your body, the loveliness of your breath as it comes in and out.

Fall in love with life all over again. And then devote yourself lovingly to it completely.

"How to Face Your Fears and Indecision"

Thought the community & readers of this Blog would enjoy this recent article from one of my close Spiritual Mentors Rick Warren.

    So...here it is:
How to Face Your Fears and Indecision
    By Rick Warren — Apr 18, 2015
    Devotional image from Rick Warren
“Trust the LORD with all your heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding. Remember the LORD in all you do, and he will give you success.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NCV)
The root of all indecision is fear. We all have different kinds of fears. We’re afraid we’ll make mistakes and embarrass ourselves. We’re afraid that we won’t be able to finish what we’ve started. We’re afraid we’re not good enough.

One of the fears that keeps us from making decisions is the fear of disapproval. Proverbs 29:25 says, “Fear of man is a dangerous trap, but to trust in God means safety” (TLB). The moment you start worrying about what other people think, it’s over, because fear of disapproval is always worse than disapproval.

So how do you get rid of a fear? There’s only one way: Face it, and move against it. You do the thing you fear the most! At some point you’ve got to stop aiming and pull the trigger.

The only antidote to fear is faith. You have to step out in faith. You’ve got to trust God and start moving.

In every major decision we’ve had to make at Saddleback Church, I was scared. But I did it anyway.

Courage is not the absence of fear; courage is moving ahead in spite of your fear. If you’re not afraid, you don’t need courage. Courage comes because you’re scared to death but you also believe it’s what God wants you to do, so you do it anyway.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust the LORD with all your heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding. Remember the LORD in all you do, and he will give you success” (NCV).

God supports those who move in faith. So here’s the question you need to ask: Where do you need to trust God? You haven’t really trusted him until you’ve attempted something you can’t do on your own power.

I don’t know what decision you need to make, but you need to prepare for it and then step out in faith. Why? Because your choices determine your character and your destiny.

Commit yourself to the Lord, and he will give you the wisdom and courage to make the decision that will bring you closer to who he made you to be.

Click here to play today’s audio teaching from Pastor Rick.

    Talk It Over

    • How have your fears kept you from moving forward in life?
    • It there a decision you need to make that requires you to trust God? What step of faith do you believe he is telling you to take?
    • What do you think it means to commit your decisions to the Lord?
